For those who don’t know me \u2014 I’m Alex Cawley, and I spend my days supporting turf customers across the Nordics. Technical support, writing useful articles, and making myself available when greenkeepers have questions. If I can help, I will \u2014 it’s probably my favourite part of the job. Think of me as your turf troubleshooter, though hopefully you’re not having too much trouble.<\/p>\n

My journey started 30 years ago when I left school and became a greenkeeper \u2014 working on courses across the UK, Australia, Sweden and Norway. Over 21 of those years have been spent in the Nordics, with course management roles in both Sweden and Norway, and a degree in turf and landscape management along the way. Three years ago I joined Syngenta. It’s been quite the ride.<\/p>\n

So, where to start? It’s been a busy few months. The year kicked off with trade shows \u2014 the UK, BTME in Harrogate,<\/p>\n

then the USA, GIS in Orlando this year\u2014 which is always a good way to shake off the January cobwebs and get a feel for what’s coming in the industry (the uncharacteristic -5 temperatures in Orlando certainly made me shake). New products, new research, new conversations. Good energy.<\/p>\n

Most recently I was in Portugal for the FEGGA conference, which was a first for me and genuinely one of the highlights of the year so far.<\/p>\n

I was invited to deliver a presentation on Dollar Spot to Portuguese greenkeepers and the other industry professionals attending. It was part of the \u2018Don Harrodine education day\u2019. Dollar spot is becoming increasingly important and relevant across Europe and the more it is understood the better equipped greenkeepers will be to fight it. Beyond the presentation, it was just a brilliant few days. Catching up with familiar faces, making new connections and being reminded of how strong and collaborative this industry really is.<\/p>\n

Now I’m back in the Nordics \u2014 and we have just had a proper winter!<\/p>\n

You know its a serious winter when you see people bicycling on the lake!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Most of the snow and ice is finally clearing, but it’s been a serious one. Particularly in the south of Sweden and Denmark, where they’ve had conditions that felt more like a proper old-fashioned winter than anything seen in recent years. I wish everyone a great start to the season and a speedy recovery for those who have some damage. There’s plenty to talk about as the season gets underway \u2014 and that’s exactly what this blog is for.
